Research project
Impact of Metallurgy on the Transformation of Canadian Society
Starting in April 2015, the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation will focus its collection development activities on metallurgy, while continuing its research on mining. As the Curator of Natural Resources at the Canada’s national museum, I am responsible for this three-year project. The project consists of historical research, which will result in an Historical Assessment of the impact of metallurgy on the transformation of Canadian society; an oral history of Canadian mining and metallurgy; artifact acquisitions for the national collection and artifact documentation; and research for a future exhibition on metallurgy. A Scholar in Residence program would allow me to conduct in-depth, focused research on the history of Canadian metallurgy in the global context. Furthermore, the research at the Iron Library would enrich artifact documentation by permitting me to better understand technology transfer between Europe and Canada. Finally, it would allow me to identify unique visual material that will enhance a future exhibition on metallurgy.
